Fashion Lessons from a French Girl

French women have a way with style, and it’s not just about the clothes. Whether it’s their minimal makeup or their love affair with stripes, the French style is cool and sexy without looking like they’re trying too hard. Here are the four lessons our resident French girl, Mariel DuPont, swears by.

1. PLAY UP YOUR ASSETS

I only incorporate the trends that make me look and feel my best. Not every trend works for me (I’ve learned that the hard way). Life is too short to not feel fabulous.

2. BASICS, BUT BETTER

Breton stripes, ballet flats, a classic trench… You could say I stick to a uniform. Instead of new clothes, I use accessories to keep my style fresh. A well-placed pin or a great shoe is often the focal point of my look.

3. COMFORT IS KEY

The better we feel in our clothing, the more confident we are. My advice: ditch the sky high heels for sneakers or a comfortable heel. You’re feet will thank you and you’ll feel more confident too!

4. THE ‘JE NA SAIS QUOI’

It literally translates to “the I don’t know what” and this phrase embodies French style, mystery, and effortless confidence. A signature scent, a red lip, or lacy bra – those are just a few ways I add a little mystery to my style.
