It’s that time of the year again! Here are five tips on nailing that job interview, straight from our president and co-founder Brett Northart:
-
Intellectual curiosity: Do your homework on the company and ask insightful questions that show genuine curiosity. If you’re not genuinely curious about the company, why are you interviewing there?
-
Attitude and resourcefulness: Demonstrate grit and scrappiness. Can you figure things out? Rather than telling me you are good at what you do, show me through prior projects or roles where you’ve rocked it.
-
History of doing interesting things: From start to finish, it’s about COMPLETING projects. Basically, can you make it happen?
-
Authenticity: Similar to dating, not every company, culture or role is for you. The last thing you want is to jump into something because you’re good at coming across a certain way. Ultimately, being yourself is the name of the game.
-
Humility: Can you write elegant code AND water the plants? Having humility to do something two levels below your job description as well as two levels above goes a long way in an early stage company. Everyone has to pitch in. I took out the trash and washed the dishes at Le Tote for several years until we could afford to pay someone to do it. Don’t act like something is beneath you!
