Fashion 411: Double denim

Unlike most fashion trends we see in a glossy magazine or the Instagram account of an it girl, denim on denim is relatively easy. We say relatively because, although it might seem absolutely effortless, all of us who have tried to put together a denim on denim look at least once in their life know it’s not all that simple. Here are some points to help you double your denim:

Mix and match: If you don’t know what shade of blue to combine with which, begin with a mix and match. Pair your skinny white jeans with a classic blue jacket or your black denim jeggings with a chambray shirt. A couple of outings of these and you will soon have the confidence to nail two blues together. Go matchy-matchy or feel free to mix up different washes.

PS: To avoid getting weighed down, it’s important to balance the weight of the denim fabrics. Try to pair a heavier denim separate with a lighter one.

Accessorize smart: A belt to break the monotony of matching separates, a trench coat that helps you play with proportions, smart layers to beat the winter chill, the double denim look is all about accessorizing. It’s key to add a pop of color in the sea of blue. Add your confidence color in the form of a bag, scarf, lip or statement heels.

PS: Avoid cowboy hats and western belts unless headed to the ranch or going line dancing!

Denim on denim is one of our favorite trends that combine fashion with function. Reese Witherspoon, France Vogue editor Emmanuelle Alt, Olivia Palermo and Miranda Kerr work double denim in that sweet girl-next-door manner that is so classic and easy to DIY.
